We're constantly being asked by bands questions like "Hey, I want to play in Europe - how do I do that?" or "My band wants to tour, is there a magical email address that will sort out everything for me?"
The answer is that no, there are very few European wide promoters willing to help out emerging bands as it's a lot of work and they need to ensure they're booking bands that will bring in the numbers. Harsh but true!
However, what you can look out for, are the smaller local-focussed companies, especially those who are keen to help promote emerging talent and the local music scene!
So, when we heard our pal Marc from Sink Or Swim was involved in a new project to get bands gigging in Switzerland, we couldn't help ourselves but get in touch to find out more!
Hey Marc old buddy! Always good to see people in bands helping out other bands with their ambition and drive. How did the idea for Hometown booking come about?
Hey Dan, so basically the idea in the beginning was about pushing and promoting the pop punk scene in Switzerland. But after we set up the first show with my band (Sink Or Swim) we got a couple requests to host shows in Switzerland over multiple genres so we decided to do this on a regular basis over as many genres as possible! Of course, to promote the pop punk scene here is still one of the main goals.
So if I'm a band in the US or the UK for example, how does it all work?
You basically send us a request over our Facebook page or our email with a few links of your band, your genre, the date you wanna play and maybe your needs here, for example if you’d need a place to crash. Generally the more information, the better! We’ll then check if the event is possible the way you want it. We don’t wanna book too many shows over a short period of time because first of all we wanna organise the shows to the very best and additionally don’t want to overload the scene here. If this would work, we’ll check if there’s any venues and bands available at that date and just keep you constantly updated on what the status of the event is.
I've heard mention of a win-win scenario with the local scene you're working with over there - how does that work?
Well this win-win scenario is actually about the band getting as much out of their show in Switzerland as possible, because we hook them up with a fitting venue and some local bands and on the other we can push our local scene with that and get some local bands to get their name out there! So everyone wins.
In general, what's the Switzerland music scene like, compared to over here in the UK?
From our UK experience I can safely say that the scene in Switzerland is way smaller, but that’s nothing bad. I mean, we’re a small country here and obviously there’s a smaller scene there. But since it’s so small, every show is somehow reachable for everyone. I don’t think that’s the case in the UK. This just creates this big family here, so somehow really everyone knows each other. On the other hand it’s probably easier to set up shows in the UK than in Switzerland, but that’s what we are here for, aren’t we?
Damn straight! Where can bands/promoters find out more about Hometown Booking?
Well we plan on launching a website in the future but for now, it’s just our Facebook page. If there’s any questions don’t hesitate to hit us up, we’ll gladly answer them!
Whilst we're here, how's it going with Sink Or Swim? What do we have to look forward to in 2018?!
We’ve been working hard on new material before and after our tour and we got a lot of new songs in the pipeline of which some of them will definitely will be released not too far from now! There’s also some stuff planned regarding tours and weekenders this year, so we’re really stoked on what the future holds!
We love seeing members of upcoming bands doing the good Samaritan thing and improving the music scene for all upcoming bands, not just their own, and wish Marc and the team the best of luck!
